You take one look at your schedule and are immediately overwhelmed by the number of things you need to accomplish by the end of the day. You don’t know where to start and feel like giving up already because you know it’s going to be impossible to finish everything.

Have you felt like this before? Most of us have. But if you use your time efficiently, you’ll have a more pleasant experience while checking off each task your to-do list. From work to errands, to making time for friends and family, you’ll be able to fit it all in. Try these 4 productivity hacks to maximize your time management skills and become more successful in every area of your life.

1. Prioritize your to-do list

Prioritizing your to-do list will relieve stress and help you feel more in control of your schedule. Instead of making one never-ending list of things you need to get done, separate your tasks into two different categories: priority and non-priority. Priority tasks are things that you need to finish by the end of the day, while non-priority tasks are less urgent and can wait until tomorrow.

Finish all of your priority tasks first, and only move on to your non-priority list if you finish all of your urgent to-dos. Try narrowing your priority list down to the 3 most important things you have to get done.

2. The Pomodoro technique

The Pomodoro technique is a time management strategy that works even if you have a habit of procrastinating. It helps you focus more intensely on one task, prevent burnout, and pushes you to get more done in a shorter amount of time. Here’s what to do:

Work for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break. Repeat this process 4 times. After your fourth break, take a longer 15-minute break.

Taking regular breaks allows you to be more efficient and prevents you from getting exhausted after just a few hours of concentrated work. The timed work period gives you a sense of urgency, so you’ll be more likely to finish the task faster than if you didn’t set a time limit. The Pomodoro technique forces you to focus on one thing at a time rather than switch between tasks, so you’ll be more likely to check off everything on your to-do list.

3. Overestimate the amount of time you’ll take to complete each task

When prioritizing items on your to-do list, give yourself more time than you think you’ll need to accomplish each goal. This will prevent you from being unrealistic and trying to fit too many tasks into a short window of time. You’ll have the flexibility you need to account for unexpected interruptions, which are bound to happen. Set reasonable deadlines and give yourself some leeway.

If you think a task will take you 30 minutes to complete, set aside an hour to complete it. If you finish it sooner, then you can move on to other things; the goal is to make sure that you have enough time for all of your priority tasks first.

4. Move around during your breaks

Whether you’re studying or working in front of a computer all day, look for opportunities to get moving whenever you can. Any form of exercise, even just going for a quick walk on your break, has worthwhile benefits and can BOOST YOUR CREATIVITY. Stretch for a few minutes every couple hours, or work while standing up instead. Sitting for long periods of time can make you feel lethargic, but regular movement will keep you alert, focused, and much more productive.
