You’ve probably come across morning routines that go something like this: wake up at 5:00 A.M., workout, meditate, get ready, and make breakfast – all before you leave for work. But if you’re not a morning person, it’s tough to find the motivation to squeeze that much into your schedule before your day even starts. So, how can you make your mornings more peaceful and structured? Read on to learn how to start every day off right with a simple morning routine that you’ll actually stick to.

Stretch (1 minute): As soon as you get out of bed, stand up and do a gentle stretch for one minute. This is a great way to wake yourself up and get moving if you can’t commit to a full-on workout every morning. Stretching your arms and neck will help relieve tension you might feel from sleeping in an awkward position. If you have back pain, simply lay on a yoga mat, place a bolster underneath your pelvis, and hold for one minute.

Go over your to-do list (5 minutes): Time to get organized and motivated! Take another minute to run through your most important tasks for the day. This will help you remain focused and productive.

Have a quick, healthy breakfast (2 minutes): Always keep a stash of mixed nuts, organic granola bars, and fruit in your kitchen for those mornings when you’re in a rush and need something to grab on your way out. Don’t forget to hydrate! Have a glass of water first thing in the morning. You can also add a bit of lemon, which can help with digestion and up your Vitamin C intake, among other health benefits.

3-step gratitude journal (5 minutes): Everyone should incorporate this activity into their day at some point. I’ve already suggested it in my 5-step self-care routine, but I think it’s an especially important step to include in your morning routine. The morning is the best time to focus on what you’re grateful for as it instantly boosts your mood and will help you become more energetic and optimistic for the rest of the day. If journaling isn’t your thing, you can just spend a few minutes reflecting on these questions, or write the answers in your phone:

  1. What are 3 things I’m grateful for?
  2. What are 3 things I love about myself?
  3. How can I make today great?

This routine is a great place to start if you want to have more relaxed morning that promotes healthy habits – without sacrificing your sleep.
